Getting a Card

Getting aย Library card is easy โ€“ just determine which category you fall into to see what type of identification you need to bring to the Circulation Desk.ย You must apply in person at the Library to obtain a Library card.

Residents of Southfield or Lathrup Village

  • Please bring your valid Michigan Driverโ€™s License or State of Michigan ID card showing your current Southfield or Lathrup Village residential address.
  • If you’re under 18, both you and a parent or legal guardian must be present. Your parent or legal guardian must bring an ID listed above.
  • Need to renew? Bring your Library card and one of the IDs listed above.

If you own property in Southfield or Lathrup Village, but do not live here, please contact Guest Services at (248) 796-4200 for information about how you can qualify for a Library card.

Non-Resident Student

  • Please bring your valid Michigan Driverโ€™s License or State of Michigan ID cardย ANDย 
  • The current semesterโ€™s class schedule or tuition receipt with your name, the schoolโ€™s name and Southfield or Lathrup Village address.
  • If you’re under 18, both you and a parent or legal guardian must be present. Your parent or legal guardian must bring both documents listed above.
  • Need to renew? Bring your Library card and the items listed above.

Student accounts can only be used at the Southfield Public Library.

Non-Resident Who Works in Southfield or Lathrup Village

  • Please bring your valid Michigan Driverโ€™s License or State of Michigan ID cardย ANDย 
  • A pay stub with your name, the companyโ€™s name and the companyโ€™s Southfield or Lathrup Village business address dated within the last 30 days.*
  • Need to renew? Bring your Library card and the items listed above.

If your pay stub shows only a non-local corporate address, please bring the pay stub and a business card or employee badge that shows your name and the local business name and address.ย  A note on corporate letterhead, signed by your supervisor within the last 30 days, stating that you’re employed at the company’s Southfield or Lathrup Village location may be substituted for a pay stub, business card or employee badge.

You Live in a TLN Community

  • Please bring your valid Michigan Driverโ€™s License or State of Michigan ID card showing your current TLN community addressย ANDย 
  • Your home TLN library card.
  • Need to renew? Bring your Library card and the items listed above.

Please note, the Southfield Public Library does not sell Library cards. Southfield Public Library cards are issued only to those who pay taxes to support the Library. Non-card holders may use materials in the building, but may not borrow any Library materials. Non-residents are limited to 25 items per card at a time.

Renewing Your Library Card

Your Library card expires every year on your birthday. If your card is expired or expiring soon you can renew it by coming to the drive up window with your Library card and driverโ€™s license or state ID. For non-residents, please bring all documentation listed under the applicable section above.ย 

If you have moved to Southfield or Lathrup Village since your last renewal, you need verification of your address. A rental agreement, mortgage statement or utility bill within the last 30 days can verify your address. You will need to bring those items with you along with your Library card and driverโ€™s license.
