The Reading Decathlon

Reading Decathlon; 10 books, 10 events, 10 weeks, Fall 2022

The Southfield Public Library is excited to announce a NEW reading program, the Reading Decathlon! This is a team reading competition that will include activities, events, and of course reading!ย ย 

Teams are asked to read at least 10 books that meet 10 criteriaย and participate in 10 reading inspired events, over 10 weeks January 9, 2023 – March 17, 2023. Register at the Youth Reference Desk.ย ย 

How Does Your Team Score Points?

  • 1 Point for Every Book Read
  • 3 Book for Every Book Review (submitted via Readsquared)

The top 10 scoring teams will be invited to a the Book Bowl Tournament. The Tournament questions will be drawn from 10 books voted on by the Decathlon participants. The 10 books with the most votes can be found here.

If you have an existing Readsquaredย account a librarian will manually add you to your team. If you do not have an existing Readsquaredย account a librarian will create one for you. Please wait until you have received a registrationย confirmation before loggingย any reading, this should take no more than 3 to 5 days.ย 

Author Visit

Join us on March 20, 2023, at 6:00 pm for an awards ceremony and author visit byย Kelly J. Baptist. Baptist is the author ofย Isaiah Dunn is My Hero,ย The Swag is in the Socks, andย The Electric Slide and Kai.ย

Book Criteria

The criteria for the Reading Decathlon include 1. Award Winner; 2. Published within the last 3 years; 4. Features a scene set in a library/with a librarian; 5. Features a non-traditional storytelling element (i.e. graphic novel panel, illustrations, poetry); 6. Has discussion questions available; 7. Features an author's note; 8. The story is set in or the author is from Michigan; 9. Is available as an audiobook; 10. Has been recommended by a librarian; 11. At least 150 pages
