Contemporary and Traditional Anishnabe Black Ash Basketry

An acclaimed maker of contemporary and traditional Anishnabe black ash baskets, Kelly Church comes from an unbroken line of basket makers going back countless centuries. In this presentation, she shares the tradition of black ash basketry, the effects of the Emerald Ash borer and current work being done to sustain the tradition. Watch how Kelly and her husband Jeff show how a basket is made from pounding the log to weaving. Presented in cooperation with the Southfield Historical Society and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi.
